Gun Storage Check Week: Take a Look at Your Storage
The first week of September is Gun Storage Check Week, and September is also Suicide Prevention Month.
It’s a good time for every firearm owner to take a few minutes to look at their storage practices and make sure firearms are secured appropriately.
Secure storage can play an important role in preventing unauthorized access during a crisis. Most firearm-related fatalities are suicide deaths, and firearm owners and family members can help save lives by taking steps to ensure that a person experiencing a crisis cannot easily access a firearm or another means of self-harm.
Use Gun Storage Check Week as a reminder to ask yourself:
- Are all of my firearms stored securely when they aren’t in use?
- Is my storage appropriate for everyone who has access to my home?
- Do I know who can access my firearms?
- Is my storage solution still working for my current needs?
- Would upgrading my storage make my home safer?
Sometimes a simple check is all it takes to identify an opportunity to improve.
