Bowling Pin Shooting Competition

NOTICE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Bristlecone Bowling Pin Shoots have been suspended until further notice. Future shoots will be posted on our calendar.

Made popular in the 1980s, Bowling Pin shoots are one of the easiest means of entering competitive shooting for shooters of all skill levels. Using just a handgun, shooters race against one another to knock down standard bowling pins from a table in the shortest elapsed time.

Bristlecone Bowling Pin Shoots are held every Monday at 5pm and 7pm. Participants are required to take Intro to Bowling Pin Shoot prior to competing in a Bowling Pin Shoot.

How Shoots Work:

A bracketed head-to-head, double-elimination competition, shooters will be assigned numbers and placed in a bracket. Two shooters will be called to the firing line with the objective of shooting at their respective bowling pins until all pins have been completely knocked off the table or they run out of ammo. The first shooter to knock all pins off their respective table is declared the winner of that round. The winner moves to a winner’s bracket and the loser moves to a loser’s bracket, competing until he/she loses twice. Rounds continue until there is a match winner. A “pin handicap” is used to ensure a fair competition between new and more experienced shooters.

Required Equipment:

  • Handgun (modern pistol or revolver, minimum 9mm/.38 Spl)
  • Two (2) handgun magazines/speed loaders
  • 100 rounds of ammunition (no steel core or cased)
  • Hearing and eye protection
  • Range-appropriate clothing (no low cut shirts or open toed shoes)

Equipment Restrictions:

  • No handgun optics (red dots or scopes)
  • No compensators or suppressors
  • No AR/AK pistols

Shoot Cost: $15

USPSA Matches

NOTICE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Bristlecone USPSA Matches will be limited to 40 competitors. Registered participants will be scheduled for match time slots at 5pm, 6pm or 7pm.

The United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) is the organization behind the fast, fun and dynamic sport of practical shooting. As a recognized USPSA Club, Bristlecone hosts Eastern Colorado USPSA matches twice each month, including sanctioned matches and Super Classifiers.

Bristlecone USPSA Matches are held the first and third Thursday of every month. Participants are required to take Intro to USPSA Competitive Shooting and/or have a USPSA Safety Card prior to competing in a USPSA Match.

How Matches Work:

Bristlecone USPSA Matches consist of 3-4 stages, often including a classifier stage. Competitors are organized into squads for the duration of the match and take turns shooting and resetting each stage. Competitors have an opportunity to walk through each stage prior to shooting. Shooters are scored based on hits, misses, no-shoots, procedural errors and time. Scores from each stage are totaled and the shooter with the most points is named the match winner.

Required Equipment:

  • Handgun (dependent on USPSA Division)
  • At least three (3) handgun magazines/speed loaders
  • Sturdy gun belt
  • Outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster (worn strong-side)
  • At least three (3) magazine/speed loader pouches
  • 200 rounds of ammunition (no steel core or cased)
  • Hearing and eye protection
  • Range-appropriate clothing (no low cut shirts or open toed shoes)

Equipment Restrictions

Restrictions on handguns, holsters, gear and ammunition are dependent on the USPSA Division of which the shooter is competing. Refer to the most recent USPSA Rules for equipment restrictions.

Match Cost: $25 ($22.50 for members)

GSSF League Matches

Founded in 1991, the GLOCK Shooting Sports Foundation (GSSF) encourages participation in shooting sports, offering fun and safe competitions for shooters of all levels across the country. Held on Bristlecone’s indoor shooting range, the GSSF Indoor Match League consists of a series of three (3) matches in a 3-month period, including one- and two-gun formats.

Participants must be a current GSSF member ($35 for new members, $25 for renewing members) and shoot a GLOCK handgun to compete. Competitors must compete in two out of three series matches to be eligible for plagues and prizes. The “Lewis” prize allocation system is used to distribute awards equitably.

How Matches Work:

GSSF Indoor League Matches consist of multiple timed courses of fire with targets at various distances. Participants may shoot up to two (2) GLOCK pistols per course of fire for each division (Stock, Unlimited, Rimfire and Pocket GLOCK) they are competing in, however, the same firearm(s) must be used in two of the three matches to be eligible for prizes. Points are calculated based on shots on target with a maximum total of 500 points and no penalty for misses or unfired shots. A competitor’s top two scores from the 3-match series are totaled and averaged and ranked in an overall list of participants. The overall list is then divided into thirds, with the top third considered “A Class,” the middle third “B Class” and the final third “C Class.” Plaques awarded to the top competitors of each class and division, plus a firearm is given away by random lottery.

Required Equipment:

  • GLOCK handgun (any model, except G36)
  • Two (2) handgun magazines/speed loaders
  • Sturdy gun belt
  • Outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster (worn strong-side)
  • Two (2) magazine pouches
  • 200 rounds of ammunition (no steel core or cased)
  • Hearing and eye protection
  • Range-appropriate clothing (no low cut shirts or open toed shoes)

Equipment Restrictions

Restrictions on GLOCK handguns are dependent on the GSSF Division of which the shooter is competing. Refer to the most recent GSSF Competition Rules for model and modification restrictions.

Match Costs

1-Gun: $20 ($18 for members)

2-Gun: $30 ($25 for members)
